Big Deal brings together native Californian Kacey Underwood and North Londoner Alice Costelloe, who shape wide-eyed, frequently heartbroken material that pulls from folk, grunge, and dream pop. The two first connected after Costelloe’s mother, employed at the school where Underwood taught music, proposed they collaborate while each was still active in separate bands. Once a few singles had appeared, the duo issued their close-knit debut Lights Out on Mute in 2011. For the next album, Costelloe and Underwood recruited two friends, turning Big Deal into a quartet. Rory Attwell produced that record, 2013’s June Gloom, which drew on both the noisy and ethereal sides of ’90s rock. While self-financing their third album, Say Yes, the band ended its relationship with Mute and had to rebuild everything after the laptop holding their demos was stolen. Captured in ten days, Say Yes surfaced on Fat Cat in June 2016.
