Biography
In 2009 the five-piece Bristol outfit the Bronze Medal came together after vocalists Chris Hillier and Robin Southwell spent six weeks backpacking across Europe, financing the journey through street performances along the way. Drawing on the National, Radiohead and the War on Drugs, the group shaped the measured, atmospheric indie rock that would define their early work. Matching that unhurried musical approach with an equally deliberate release schedule, they completed the lineup by bringing in Rory O'Gorman, Daniel Rogers and Mike Barnett. Initial performances took place at modest local venues before expanding to clubs throughout the U.K., eventually earning the band appearances at 2000 Trees and on the BBC Introducing Stage at Reading. A self-titled EP surfaced in 2012; its spacious, atmospheric songs attracted New Music Club, which promptly added the group to its roster. Refining each track with care over an extended period, the band ultimately traveled to Iceland to record its debut album with producer Valgeir Sigurðsson (Brian Eno, Sigur Rós, Feist) at Greenhouse Studios. Issued in 2014, the album was titled Darlings.
