Biography
After Shallow disbanded, Kansas natives Julie, handling vocals, guitar, and keys, alongside Jason Shields on bass and loops, brought in drummer Kevin Trevino to launch the Capsules in 2001. The trio sustained a melodic, loop-infused dream pop approach reminiscent of Metric, Blonde Redhead, and the Cocteau Twins. Their first release arrived in 2002 as the album Reverser through Indiana-based Urinine Records, which also issued the 2004 follow-up Someone for Everyone before folding that year. The band pressed ahead by issuing the Home EP before the end of 2004. Additional work included a contribution to the children’s television program Spongebob Squarepants, placements on PBS’s Roadtrip Nation and the video game Borderlands 2, and extensive touring alongside the Flaming Lips, the Mountain Goats, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Following their move to Dallas, Texas, the Capsules started Vespera Records, which reissued the full Shallow catalog along with the group’s next two albums, Long Distance Dedication in 2008 and Northern Lights & Southern Skies in 2013. The fifth Capsules album, The Long Goodbye from 2014, appeared on the Texas-based indie Saint Marie Records, an imprint focused on dream pop and shoegaze acts.
