The Disney Afternoon Studio Chorus

Disney had already established itself as a powerhouse in family-oriented cinema when it ventured into recorded music by launching the Walt Disney Music Company in 1949. That publishing arm began handling the songs attached to the studio’s productions the following year with the release of Cinderella. During the 1950s the company introduced two dedicated labels: Disneyland Records, which specialized in soundtracks, narrated stories, and selections drawn from The Mickey Mouse Club, and Buena Vista, which focused on recordings by Disney contract performers including Fess Parker, Annette Funicello, and Darlene Gillespie alongside individual tracks extracted from its feature films. By 1989 these separate imprints were merged into the single entity Walt Disney Records, an operation that promptly began re-releasing vintage soundtracks while also issuing interactive read-along and sing-along products, anthologies of classic and recent Disney material, and full scores for current releases, several of which achieved multi-platinum status, among them The Lion King, Beauty & the Beast, Aladdin, and The Little Mermaid. The label’s momentum persisted into the twenty-first century as the acquisition of Pixar, The Muppets, Marvel, and Star Wars further expanded its catalog of cinematic and musical properties.
