Biography
Joe Jonas has established himself among the foremost pop figures of his era, whether fronting the Jonas Brothers or leading his dance-rock project DNCE. He first achieved prominence during the 2000s with brothers Nick and Kevin, delivering hook-laden power pop singles such as “S.O.S.,” “Play My Music,” and “Paranoid” that repeatedly propelled their albums into the upper reaches of the Billboard 200. Subsequent Disney Channel projects, ranging from guest spots on Hannah Montana to the feature film Camp Rock, further cemented the trio’s status as pop icons. Building on that foundation, Jonas issued his debut solo effort, Fastlife, in 2011. While expanding beyond his teen-pop origins without abandoning them, he assembled the ’80s dance-rock and new-wave-inflected outfit DNCE, whose tracks “Cake by the Ocean” and “Toothbrush” propelled the 2017 self-titled debut album to number 17 on the Billboard 200. Between Jonas Brothers reunions, he has maintained a presence in both acting and music, appearing in HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones and serving as a judge on The Voice. Fresh DNCE singles “Move” and “Got Me Good” surfaced in 2022, the same year he starred in the Korean War drama Devotion and supplied the soundtrack single “Not Alone,” featuring Khalid. In 2024 the singer previewed his second solo album, Music for People Who Believe in Love, via the track “Work It Out.”
Born in Casa Grande, Arizona, in 1989, Jonas was raised in a household steeped in music, his father a songwriter and ordained minister and his mother a singer and sign-language instructor. The Jonas Brothers initially took shape as a solo vehicle for younger sibling Nick, who had already performed in multiple Broadway productions before securing a 2004 recording deal with INO Records. Having himself logged Broadway experience, Joe contributed songwriting to several cuts on Nick’s debut album; those songs later reached Columbia Records president Steve Greenberg, who opted instead to launch all three brothers as a pop group.
The Jonas Brothers attained mainstream traction in 2007 when their self-titled second album entered the Billboard 200 at number five. Television exposure proved equally potent, yielding the Disney Channel movie franchise Camp Rock plus the series Jonas Brothers: Living the Dream and JONAS. Branching out on his own, Joe scored a Top Ten single in 2008 with the Camp Rock duet “This Is Me” alongside Demi Lovato. Two years afterward he announced a solo album that materialized in 2011 as Fastlife, which climbed to number 15 on the Billboard 200.
Following the Jonas Brothers’ 2013 split, Joe explored forming a new ensemble and ultimately recruited touring alumni JinJoo Lee and Jack Lawless—alongside Cole Whittle—to comprise DNCE. The group’s 2015 EP yielded the breakout single “Cake by the Ocean,” and the ensuing full-length DNCE arrived the next year under production from Sir Nolan, Ilya, Mattman & Robin, and additional collaborators; bolstered by “Body Moves,” it reached number 17 on the Billboard 200.
During DNCE’s subsequent hiatus, Jonas released the 2018 solo single “It’s Party Time.” He also rejoined his brothers for their fifth studio album, 2019’s Happiness Begins, which featured several Ryan Tedder productions including lead single “Sucker” and “Cool” and became their third consecutive Billboard 200 chart-topper. After a 2021 tour with the siblings, he issued the solo track “Go It Alone.” In 2022 he collaborated with Khalid on “Not Alone” for the Devotion soundtrack, in which he also appeared, then revived DNCE with “Move” before rejoining the Jonas Brothers for 2023’s The Album. The dance-oriented “Work It Out” emerged in July 2024 as the inaugural single from his sophomore solo album, Music for People Who Believe in Love.
