Liam Payne

Liam Payne gained initial fame through his involvement in the boy band One Direction, establishing himself as an English pop singer and songwriter who incorporated elements of electronic dance, hip-hop, and R&B into his approach. Once One Direction concluded, he achieved multiple solo successes toward the end of the 2010s, among them the single "Strip That Down" featuring Quavo and "For You" with Rita Ora. After issuing numerous standalone tracks over several years, he assembled them into his first solo full-length, LP1, which appeared in 2019 and entered the U.K. Top 20. Additional singles emerged later, among them 2020's "Midnight" alongside Alesso and "Teardrops" in 2024. Payne died in Buenos Aires on October 16, 2024.

Born in Wolverhampton in the West Midlands, he first engaged with performance and creative fields at age 12 through the Pink Productions Theatre Company, where he cultivated a compelling stage presence. His initial public exposure came via an audition for the 2008 edition of The X Factor, during which he interpreted Frank Sinatra's "Fly Me to the Moon." After an unsuccessful start, judge Simon Cowell encouraged him with the suggestion to "come back in two years." Payne followed that advice precisely, returning in 2010 to deliver a performance of Michael Bublé's take on the enduring American torch song "Cry Me a River" that impressed the panel.

Although he did not advance into the Boys category during the judges' houses round, a proposal from guest judge Nicole Scherzinger resulted in his placement alongside four other unsuccessful male contestants. This grouping formed the foundation of what became One Direction. Alongside future bandmates Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik, Payne devoted the ensuing weeks to rehearsals and building rapport. Their qualifying cover of Natalie Imbruglia's "Torn" advanced them on the program, rapidly building broad recognition and enthusiasm across the U.K.

After signing with Simon Cowell's Syco imprint in 2010, One Direction attained widespread acclaim, beginning with their debut studio album Up All Night the next November. Over subsequent years they issued Take Me Home (2012), Midnight Memories (2013), Four (2014), and Made in the A.M. (2015), each reaching number one and enjoying enormous commercial impact. Payne earned recognition for his wide-ranging vocal abilities and contributions as one of the group's main songwriters.

In summer 2014 Payne established Hampton Music Limited as his independent creative vehicle for projects outside One Direction. Operating under the production alias "Payno," occasionally styled "Big Payno," he partnered with the duo AfterHrs to deliver a remix of Cheryl Cole's 2014 single "I Don't Care" and earned co-writing credits on tracks from the related album Only Human. Throughout the mid- to late 2010s he issued solo material and pursued separate ventures, collaborating with figures such as English songwriter Jamie Scott on "The Night We Met," Irish pop group Hometown, and rappers Wiz Khalifa and Juicy J on the track "You."

Payne issued his debut official single, "Strip That Down," in May 2017—a midtempo, trap- and R&B-leaning recording he co-wrote with Ed Sheeran and producer Steve Mac, featuring Quavo. Following an appearance on Zedd's "Get Low," he released "Bedroom Floor." In 2018 he joined Rita Ora for the romantic single "For You," featured on the Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack, and paired with J Balvin on "Familiar," which reached number 25 on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart. His debut EP First Time arrived months afterward, including French Montana on the title track. Further collaborations included "Polaroid" with Jonas Blue and Lennon Stella and "Stack It Up" with A Boogie wit da Hoodie; together with his earlier hits involving Quavo, Zedd, Rita Ora, and J Balvin, these selections formed the tracklist of his official debut album LP1, released in December 2019.

In 2020 Payne joined electronic producer Alesso for the single "Midnight," which later received remixes by Jack Wins, Rompasso, and others. He also worked with pop singer Dixie on "Naughty List" and composed "Sunshine" for the Ron's Gone Wrong soundtrack the next year. The romantic, R&B-styled slow jam "Teardrops," co-written by Payne, JC Chasez, and Jamie Scott, surfaced in March 2024 as the opening track from his anticipated second album. Months afterward, on October 16, 2024, Payne died in Buenos Aires.
