Biography
Australia's 5 Seconds of Summer fused pop-punk drive with the magnetic appeal of boy bands when they arrived on the global stage in the early 2010s, drawing listeners through anthemic, melody-driven tracks that propelled their self-titled 2014 debut straight to the top of the pop charts. Although their next release, Sounds Good Feels Good, kept the guitar-centered approach and secured a second number-one position in both Australia and the United States, the band pivoted sharply toward polished electronic dance-pop on their 2018 album Youngblood, which became their third chart-topper. Further evolution appeared on 2021's Calm, where goth rock and industrial elements surfaced and again placed them inside the Top Ten across the United Kingdom, Australia, and the United States; the quartet also handled most of the production on the subsequent 2022 effort 5SOS5.
The group came together in 2011 with Luke Hemmings handling lead vocals and guitar, Michael Clifford on guitar and vocals, Calum Hood covering bass and vocals, and Ashton Irwin on drums and vocals. Early recognition arrived through YouTube acoustic renditions of songs by Mike Posner, Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber, and additional artists, prompting Sony to offer a publishing agreement that led to two 2012 EPs titled Unplugged and Somewhere New. Momentum increased in the following year when One Direction invited them to open concerts, after which Capitol Records added them to its roster and a third EP, She Looks So Perfect, surfaced in 2014.
Their first full-length studio album, 5 Seconds of Summer, appeared a year later and quickly reached number one in more than a dozen countries worldwide. A global tour ensued, followed by the live recording LIVESOS that included a version of the Romantics' 1980 single "What I Like About You." After a pause, the members headed to Los Angeles to collaborate once more with producer John Feldmann, previously responsible for the bulk of their debut.
In 2015 they issued their sophomore studio set, Sounds Good Feels Good, enlisting Good Charlotte's Benji and Joel Madden, All-Time Low's Alex Gaskarth, the Monsters & the Strangerz, and further contributors. The track list featured "Permanent Vacation," first performed during live shows, along with lead single "She's Kinda Hot" and "Jet Black Heart." The album simultaneously claimed the top spot in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia. An extensive world tour spanning Asia, Europe, North America, and Australia followed, and once the Sounds Live Feels Live run ended in late 2016 the band returned to the studio for their third album.
Youngblood arrived in 2018 under the guidance of Carl Falk, Rami Yacoub, Sir Nolan, and additional producers, marking a decisive move into more refined dance-pop territory. Powered by singles "Want You Back" and "Youngblood," the record secured the group's third straight number-one placement on the Billboard 200.
The brooding single "Easier" emerged in May 2019 as the first preview of their fourth album. Produced by Andrew Watt and co-written with Charlie Puth, the song expanded on atmospheric '80s goth and industrial textures that shaped the 2020 release Calm. Additional focus tracks "Teeth," "No Shame," and "Old Me" helped the set reach number two on the Billboard 200 while topping charts in both the United Kingdom and Australia; the acronym Calm, drawn from the members' first names and embraced by fans, titled the project. In September 2020 Ashton Irwin became the first member to issue a solo album, Superbloom.
March 2022 brought the debut of "Complete Mess," the initial single from fifth studio album 5SOS5. The Take My Hand World Tour launched a month later after repeated postponements caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Issued in September 2022, 5SOS5 was produced primarily by the band and guitarist Michael Clifford, with further input from Goldfinger's John Feldmann, Colin Brittain, Jon Bellion, and others.
