The Foreshadowing stand among Italy’s goth metal acts through material defined by darkness, melancholy, pessimism, and pervasive gloom and despair. Observers have drawn parallels to Depeche Mode on multiple occasions, noting the shared sorrowful outlook and brooding melodic approach even though Depeche Mode never operated as a metal band or adhered to classic goth aesthetics associated with Bauhaus or Sisters of Mercy. Metal-oriented comparisons have encompassed My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, and Anathema. In contrast to many Italian goth metal groups that rely on female lead vocalists delivering ethereal, angelic performances—most prominently Milan-based Lacuna Coil—the Foreshadowing feature male frontman Marco Benevento.

Origins remain subject to differing interpretations, since traces of activity reach back to 1997 even though the Foreshadowing did not coalesce into an operational band until the mid-2000s. Guitarist Alessandro Pace, who also performs under the name Alex Vega and was born May 20, 1977, in Rome, Italy, resolved in 1997 to establish a goth metal project, though the eventual band name surfaced later. Pace participates in two other Rome-based groups: the alternative rock ensemble KLIMT 1918 and the industrial rock outfit Dope Stars, Inc., which he joined in 2005 and left in 2007. The Foreshadowing nevertheless serves as the primary outlet for Pace’s goth sensibilities, leading him around 1998 to bring aboard guitarist Andrea Chiodetti, who has performed with Grimness and previously belonged to Spiritual Front, plus keyboardist Francesco Sosto, likewise a former member of Spiritual Front.

For an extended interval the Foreshadowing stayed at the planning stage and refrained from typical band practices such as touring, transporting gear into clubs, or producing an album. Tangible activity began in the mid-2000s once Pace (also known as Vega), Chiodetti, and Sosto—who supplies backing vocals—were joined by drummer Jonah Padella, who has performed with Grimness, bassist Davide Pesola, who has shared stages with Pace in KLIMT 1918, and lead singer Marco Benevento, also credited as Dust and previously the vocalist for Italian goth metal band How Like a Winter. With this six-person roster established, the Foreshadowing recorded debut album Days of Nothing in 2006, which Candlelight Records released in both Europe and the United States in 2007. The gloomy and minimalist Oionos appeared in 2010 on Metal Blade, followed in 2012 by Second World, which completed the apocalyptic trilogy. Drummer Padella departed the next year and was succeeded by Giuseppe Orlando, formerly of Novembre, while 2016 saw the release of the group’s fourth full-length album, Seven Heads, Ten Horns.
