Biography
Confirming that Southern rock remains vital and untamed, the Georgia Thunderbolts emerged from Rome in the Peach State to channel classic '70s sounds through a modern lens of drive and swagger. The quintet specializes in rowdy, guitar-driven hard rock that emphasizes upbeat energy and celebratory vibes, first gaining wider attention via a five-track self-titled EP. Warmly received by devotees of vintage hard rock, the band refined its approach for the 2021 Mascot release Can We Get a Witness and followed with Rise Above It All in August 2024.
The group originated in 2015 when high school friends T.J. Lyle and Riley Couzzourt decided to pursue their mutual interest in old-school hard rock and Southern rock. Lyle handled lead vocals along with keyboards and harmonica, while Couzzourt took lead guitar duties; they soon added Logan Tolbert on guitar, Zach Everett on bass and keyboards, and Bristol Perry on drums. After adopting the Georgia Thunderbolts name and building experience through regional gigs, the band secured an opening slot for the Kentucky Headhunters at an agricultural fair. Guitarist Richard Young of the Headhunters caught part of their performance from his tour bus, then watched the remainder onstage, leading him to become their manager and produce their independent debut Southern Rock from Rome in 2019.
Continued club headlining and support slots alongside Black Stone Cherry, the Cadillac Three, and Blackberry Smoke attracted label interest, resulting in a Mascot deal in 2020. Pandemic restrictions halted full album sessions, so the band compiled five tracks from those recordings into the self-titled EP issued by Mascot that year. The 2021 full-length Can We Get a Witness reached listeners and critics alike, with “Lend a Hand” gaining traction on streaming platforms. Further touring paved the way for the third album, Rise Above It All, which appeared in August 2024.
