Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day conceived the Longshot as a punk-inflected power pop outfit that made its understated debut in April 2018. Following Green Day’s 2016 album Revolution Radio, Armstrong laid down the tracks for the group’s first release, Love Is for Losers, largely on his own. His son Joey contributed drums solely to the track “Happiness,” marking the only additional credit on the album. Public awareness of the Longshot emerged through an Instagram post in February 2018. This preceded the abrupt drop of a three-song EP at the start of April. Shortly thereafter, on April 20, the band issued the complete Love Is for Losers and revealed plans for an accompanying tour. Armstrong took to the stage alongside bassist Jeff Matika—known for his guitar work with Green Day—along with guitarist Kevin Preston and drummer David S. Field, both members of Prima Donna. Preston further participates in Foxboro Hot Tubs, yet another side project tied to Armstrong.
