Biography
Formed in Tempe, Arizona, the roots-rock outfit the Pistoleros featured frontman Lawrence Zubia together with his brother Mark on guitar, plus Thomas Laufenberg also handling guitar duties, bassist Scott Andrews, and drummer Gary Smith. Offspring of a mariachi musician, the Zubias first surfaced in the Chimeras alongside the ill-fated future Gin Blossoms guitarist Douglas Hopkins; Hopkins’s composition “My Guardian Angel” later appeared on the Pistoleros’ 1997 debut Hang on to Nothing, an album that also drew songwriting input from the Jayhawks’ Gary Louris, the Smithereens’ Pat DiNizio, and Radney Foster.
