Formed in 2008, the San Francisco lo-fi pop trio the Sandwitches came together when Grace Cooper and Heidi Alexander, both of whom had sung backup for Fresh & Onlys, joined forces with Roxy Brodeur, formerly the drummer for Pillars of Silence. Their music fuses world-weary folk, the swagger of 1960s girl groups, and catchy indie pop reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac, resulting in a style that mixes gothic theatricality with the feel of a front-porch singalong. On the Turn Up label they issued their first album, How to Make Ambient Sad Cake, in 2009, then followed it with the Duck, Duck, Goose! EP the next year. While touring behind that debut, Brodeur stepped away temporarily, so Lance Kramer from the Beat Cops filled the drum chair until her return. She rejoined in time to appear on the band’s second album, Mrs. Jones' Cookies, which arrived in spring 2011. The Sandwitches kept performing, sometimes headlining and sometimes opening for other San Francisco acts such as Thee Oh Sees and Sonny & the Sunsets, before releasing their third full-length, Our Toast, in June 2015.
