The Shelters, a Los Angeles-based rock & roll quartet, fuse fuzz-heavy garage textures with the brash theatricality of glam and understated blues-inflected melodies. Their self-titled debut full-length, produced by Tom Petty, appeared in 2016.

Chase Simpson, Josh Jove, and Sebastian Harris formed the group in Los Angeles during 2014; all three had played on Tom Petty’s Hypnotic Eye album that same year. Bassist Jacob Pillot joined shortly afterward. In the middle of 2015 the band issued the track “Birdwatching,” which appeared on a four-song self-titled EP the following October. Steven Van Zandt highlighted the EP cut “Fortune Teller” as the “Coolest Song in the World This Week!” during a February 2016 broadcast of his radio program. Later that year Petty brought the Shelters out as support for his band Mudcrutch. He also served as co-producer of the Shelters’ debut album, released by Warner Records in June 2016, which entered Billboard’s Heatseekers Albums chart.

Following Petty’s sudden passing in 2017, the Shelters reconvened to finish work on “Strange,” a track he had favored yet had not included on their first record. The resulting second album, Jupiter Sidecar, was produced by Joe Chiccarelli and issued in September 2019.
