Biography
Originating from Vancouver, BC, the garage-punk group the Smugglers assembled in 1988 when vocalist Grant Lawrence joined forces with guitarists David Carswell and Nick Thomas. Bassist Adam Woodall and drummer Paul Preminger rounded out the first lineup, which delivered its opening single "Up and Down" on the small Nardwuar imprint in 1990. The following year bassist Beez took over for Woodall on the 10" At Marineland, after which Bryce Dunn replaced Preminger behind the kit for the 1992 album Atlanta Whiskey Flats. In the Hall of Fame surfaced the next year, and 1994 brought a run of singles—"Tattoo Dave," "Gotta Gotta Gotta," and "Party...Party...Party...Pooper!"—before the full-length Wet Pants Club closed the year. Further 45s such as "Whiplash!" and "Senor Pantsdown" continued to enlarge the band’s busy output, while Selling the Sizzle! appeared in 1996 as a co-release on the Canadian indie Mint and its American partner Lookout. The live set Growing Up Smuggler arrived in 1998 to mark the Smugglers’ tenth anniversary and proved to be Dunn’s final recording with the group; drummer Graham Watson then came aboard for the 2000 album Rosie.
