Biography
The Traditional Fools came together as a brief side effort by garage-psych figure Ty Segall in the narrow stretch after his first band the Epsilons split and ahead of his own solo work gaining traction. Their output mixed a buoyant, low-fidelity blend of vintage punk, 1960s garage rock, and surf material heavy with reverb. Segall handled guitar and vocals, Andrew Luttrell covered bass, and David Fox sat behind the drums. The three performed scattered live shows and issued a four-track 7" EP through Chocolate Covered Records in 2007. That same year they also put out the limited cassette-only release Live at Wizard Mountain. Their sole studio album, the self-titled set on In the Red, was tracked in 2008. Occasional reunion gigs followed, yet the band effectively dissolved soon after the record appeared. Segall’s rising profile kept collectors and listeners attentive to the Traditional Fools’ buoyant, unruly sound. In 2016 In the Red issued the compilation Fools Gold, which gathered the scarce Chocolate Covered EP along with thirteen previously unheard tracks.
