Hailing from Canada, Tomb Mold operates as a four-piece extreme metal unit whose jarring approach fuses the raw ferocity typical of American death metal with the brooding, expansive atmospheres long associated with Finnish forebears such as Demilich and Convulse. The group followed this template across well-received releases including Primordial Malignity (2017) and Planetary Clairvoyance (2019). On 2023’s Enduring Spirit the quartet broadened its range by incorporating jazz fusion, 1970s progressive rock, and the ethereal textures of 4AD-style dream pop.

The Toronto-based outfit began in 2015 as a duo consisting of drummer/vocalist Max Klebanoff and guitarist Derrick Vella. Taking its name from the horror RPG Bloodborne, the project issued two independent demos that year— The Bottomless Perdition and The Moulting—before delivering the full-length Primordial Malignity the next year. With the addition of second guitarist Payson Power and bassist Steve Musgrave, the lineup recorded the 2017 demo Cryptic Transmissions; a year later the band signed with 20 Buck Spin and issued the intense Manor of Infinite Forms. Planetary Clairvoyance arrived in 2019, fully channeling American death-metal energy across a propulsive, technically assured collection that drew acclaim from both underground and mainstream metal listeners. An informal break followed, during which members pursued separate endeavors such as Dream Unending and Daydream Plus, until the collective reconvened in 2022 to release the three-song EP Aperture Body. Tomb Mold’s most wide-ranging effort to date, Enduring Spirit, surfaced in 2023 and drew elements from numerous metal, pop, jazz, and rock subgenres.
