Sanguisugabogg emerged from Columbus, Ohio, in 2019 as an absurdist extreme metal outfit whose death metal sound is marked by filthy, heavily downtuned riffing and lyrics that blend graphic gore with persistent tongue-in-cheek humor. The original lineup featured vocalist Devin Swank, who also performs stand-up comedy, guitarist Cameron Boggs, bassist Steph Barnes, and drummer Cody Davidson; Boggs was later succeeded by Cedrik Davis, while Drew Arnold took over for Barnes. The group’s moniker fuses the Latin term sanguisuga, denoting leech, with the British slang “bog” for toilet, conjuring the image of a bloodsucking commode. Track titles such as “Turkish Blood Orgy,” “Gored in the Chest,” “Urinary Ichor,” “Black Market Vasectomy,” and “Testicular Rot” illustrate the thematic territory they explore.

Longtime admirers of classic death metal, the members encountered the style early; Swank attended his first concert, a Cannibal Corpse performance, at age twelve. Equally renowned for heavy psychedelic indulgence as for their recordings, the musicians asserted that both albums were tracked entirely under the influence of acid and adopted the self-description “drug death metal.” Although their demeanor remained lighthearted and irreverent, they approached the music with rigor, locking into crushing drop-G tuning, eliminating solos, and maintaining an unyielding groove built on piledriving riffs.

Century Media signed the band after hearing the 2019 demo EP Pornographic Seizures, leading to the 2021 release of their debut full-length, Tortured Whole. In response to objections regarding the EP’s depictions of violence against women, the group revised the album’s lyrical focus to center exclusively on violence against men. Their follow-up effort, Homicidal Ecstasy, appeared in 2023.
