Tony Matterhorn entered the world in Kingston, Jamaica, where an early fascination with sound systems and the selector craft took hold during his high school years. Before long he gained recognition through his role in the duo King Addis, whose high-energy performances became his signature calling card. Clubs across North America hosted his sets of raw, hardcore dancehall, earning him several honors, most notably the dancehall World Cup title in 2000. Mainstream American listeners finally embraced him during the summer of 2006, when the explosive single “Dutty Wine” received heavy rotation on R&B and rap stations nationwide. Though his recorded output tapered off in the 2010s, frequent stage appearances and public disputes—most prominently a 2012 press clash with New Kidz and another with Bounty Killer in 2015—kept the selector’s name circulating regularly through Jamaican newspapers.
