Born in Stockport, England, Treva Whateva earned his funky nickname early on. An obsessive collector of vinyl from childhood, he took a natural next step when he landed his first real job at a record shop in 1993. That shop, Boom! Tunes, belonged to the Ruf (aka Dave the Ruf), who would later spin as a member of the Jeep Beat Collective. After the store closed, Treva stepped away from music retail for a couple of years before joining the Fat City shop and label in 1997. While assembling the imprint’s Mystic Brew compilations, he continued shaping his own material. His first appearance came with the track “Tum and Waist” on the fourth volume of DJ Morpheus’ Freezone series, followed by additional compilation spots that led to a 2000 deal with the Skint label. Overdrawn & Overdue and Long Time Female Friend both surfaced on Skint before he moved to Coldcut’s Ninja Tune imprint in 2002. The Dance Class EP marked his initial output for Ninja Tune in 2004. By 2005 the producer’s distinctive blend of quirk and whimsy required more room than EPs could provide, resulting in the full-length Music’s Made of Memories.
