The '80s electro group Twilight 22 operated under the leadership of computer and synthesizer expert Gordon Bahary, who also incorporated key input from lead vocalist and co-songwriter Joseph Saulter. Bahary launched his career after receiving an invitation to support Stevie Wonder throughout the sessions for the 1976 landmark Songs in the Key of Life, at which point the assistant had reached only age 16. Wonder subsequently asked Bahary to contribute to the follow-up project Journey Through the Secret of Plants, released in 1979, where the young musician handled production duties and synthesizer programming. During that same period Bahary encountered Saulter via shared contact Herbie Hancock while contributing to the sessions for Hancock's Feets Don't Fail Me Now. Although Saulter had begun as a drummer in the Los Angeles ensemble Rhythm Ignition, his vocal abilities generated the greatest interest and prompted the creation of Twilight 22 during the opening years of the 1980s. The outfit's solitary single, "Electric Kingdom," marked one of the defining releases in electro, yet the self-titled album issued by Vanguard in 1984 represented their final outing on a label before the members parted ways soon afterward. Bahary and Saulter each continued performing on additional artists' recordings and pursuing production work.
