Twisted Black, also known as 145, originated from Detroit yet launched his rap career through Texas. Partnering with lyricist Seed, he formed one half of the Houston favorites One Gud Cide, whose 1996 full-length release Look What the Streets Made achieved local success. Encouraged by this regional response, the duo aimed for national recognition via their 1999 follow-up Contradictions, only for Black to receive a three-year prison term stemming from an assault causing serious injury, preventing any promotional efforts. During incarceration he continued crafting lyrics with plans to resume upon freedom. Seed, however, had departed by then, compelling Black into a solo path against his wishes. The independent arrival of Late Bloomer in 2003 caught the eye of TVT Records. Coinciding with the March 2007 release of his initial TVT project came another incarceration, this one resulting in a 30-year sentence for conspiracy along with the delivery of 1,022 grams of crack cocaine. An appeal was promptly submitted by Black's legal team.
