Biography
Ulthar, a California-based blackened death metal trio active since 2014, merges raw sonic ferocity with Lovecraftian dread. Its lineup draws from Bay Area veterans Shelby Lermo of Vastum and Extremity, Justin Ennis of Void Omnia along with prior stints in Mutilation Rites and Tombs, and Steve Peacock of Mastery. The band adopted its name from H.P. Lovecraft’s short story “The Cats of Ulthar.”
The group issued its debut full-length, Cosmovore, through 20 Buck Spin in 2018. Its lacerating technical death metal approach recalled the scorched intensity of Morbid Angel and Immortal, earning swift acclaim within the extreme metal underground and prompting an immediate return to the studio. That follow-up effort, Providence, explored similarly shadowy reaches of the style and appeared on the same label in 2020.
Social and civic restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic fueled an especially fertile stretch, yielding two further LPs in 2023. Anthronomicon and Helionomicon mined the band’s black metal arsenal to introduce ominous new layers and unflagging sonic menace within its expanding blackened death metal framework.
