Ultraista represents an experimental electro-pop endeavor uniting superstar producer Nigel Godrich, multi-instrumentalist Joey Waronker, and vocalist Laura Bettinson. Deriving their moniker from the early 20th century Spanish literary movement ultraísmo, the three musicians surfaced in 2012 bearing a sonic approach that the group traced to passions for Afrobeat, electronica, and art, along with tequila as an influence. Prior to her collaborations with Waronker and Godrich—who had both joined Radiohead's Thom Yorke in Atoms for Peace—Bettinson issued material and performed under the Dimbleby & Capper name while sharing origins in the same London-based circle of musicians behind Micachu & the Shapes and the Invisible. The group's self-titled first album, containing the single "smalltalk," appeared in 2012. Late in 2019 a deluxe version of that LP emerged, accompanied by the fresh single "The King." March 2020 then brought Sister, the trio's second studio album.
