Biography
Vacations emerged as an Australian indie rock outfit whose initial local popularity soon expanded internationally, driven by their polished sound that intertwines guitar lines with electronic keyboards while drawing from lo-fi indie pop and 1980s alternative textures. Campbell Burns, the band’s guitarist and chief songwriter, guided their formative recordings, beginning with the low-budget 2015 Days EP, whose unvarnished, live-in-the-room character stemmed directly from limited resources. Growing more assured in the studio, the group delivered greater refinement on the 2018 album Changes and the 2020 release Forever in Bloom. After moving to Los Angeles, they unveiled their third full-length, No Place Like Home, in 2024.
Originating in Newcastle, New South Wales, the project was founded in 2015 by vocalist-guitarist-songwriter Campbell Burns, who adopted a strictly independent method for the self-issued debut EP Days, featuring bassist Jake Johnson and drummer Harrison Chapman. With the arrival of lead guitarist Nate Delizzotti and drummer Joseph Van Lier, the 2016 follow-up EP Vibes captured a settled quartet; its track “Young” later spread rapidly across social platforms, lifting streams into the thousands and establishing the band’s first major breakthrough. After widespread live dates, the two early EPs received a combined compact-disc reissue in 2017. Changes arrived the next year and supplied another major success in “Telephones,” enabling headline shows in sizable Australian and British venues plus a U.S. introduction at the South by Southwest Festival. A 2019 standalone single, “On Your Own,” preceded the second album Forever in Bloom, whose 2020 rollout and touring plans were curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Burns spent the period at home composing and constructing a personal studio; once finished, it hosted the three-song EP Terms & Conditions, issued in July 2023 and containing the title cut alongside the singles “Midwest” and “Next Exit.” His subsequent relocation to Los Angeles, together with an obsessive-compulsive disorder diagnosis, shaped the songs that became the 2024 album No Place Like Home.
