Vehicle Flips originated in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania during 1994, when guitarist and vocalist Frank Boscoe assembled the initial lineup alongside bassist Tim Parker, guitarist Erik Lipsky, and drummer Tim Hoffman. In those first months the quartet appeared alongside the Karl Hendricks Trio, Jonny Cohen's Love Machine, Crayon, and the Softies. Later that same year Jeff Schreckengost replaced Lipsky on guitar while Craig Whitman assumed the drum chair. Harriet Records issued the group's debut release, the single Our Returning Champion, in 1994 and followed it with the full-length In Action the next year.

Throughout 1995 and 1996 the band generated a sizable catalog of material, placing singles on Harriet, Hemiola Records, Rover Records, and Numeric Records. During that span Vehicle Flips performed thirty-nine shows, the busiest stretch in its history. Frank Boscoe's brother Paul added vocals between 1995 and 1996. From 1996 to 1997 drummer Tim Williams and multi-instrumentalist Eric Topolsky entered the fold, while guitarist Jesse Trbovich contributed in 1996.

Magic Marker Records of Portland, Oregon put out The Premise Unraveled in 1998. Kisswhistle's John Lancia became the final drummer that year. Boscoe, Lancia, and Parker undertook a short Pacific Northwest tour late in 1998 to mark the album's arrival. Early in 2000 the band delivered its last full-length, For You I Pine. Additional tracks surfaced on compilations such as Harriet's The Long Secret (1995) and The Friendly Society (1998), March Records' Pop American Style (1995), and various collections from Sing, Eunuchs!, ZUM, and Eighty North Records. The group disbanded shortly after its appearance at the 2000 CMJ festival. Boscoe subsequently launched the Gazetteers.
