Since the start of the 2000s, few soul-blues performers have matched Vick Allen’s output; known as “the velvet voice of soul,” he also writes songs, produces, arranges, and plays multiple instruments. Born in Jackson, Mississippi, Allen issued his initial album at fifteen and, following high school, performed with the Canton Spirituals. His official introduction arrived in 2002 via the album Let's Dance; from that point he expanded his catalog at regular two- to three-year intervals, reaching the 2012 project Soul Music. Across these recordings he delivered updated songs anchored in classic R&B and informed by the styles of Ronald Isley, Al Green, and Tyrone Davis. Numerous artists, notably Willie Clayton, Denise LaSalle, and Shirley Brown, have recruited him for collaborations.
