Biography
An earthy and earnest country singer/songwriter from Texas, Vincent Neil Emerson traces a line established by fellow Lone Star State troubadours Townes Van Zandt and Willie Nelson and carried forward by Charley Crockett. His gentle drawl suits both the gritty barroom country he sometimes favors and the vulnerable ballads he also delivers with equal conviction. The 2019 debut Fried Chicken & Evil Women and the self-titled 2021 follow-up, helmed by Rodney Crowell, both found him leaning into those vintage influences, while the Shooter Jennings-produced The Golden Crystal Kingdom from 2023 revealed a wider Americana reach.
Born in East Texas with Native American roots, Emerson eventually settled in Fort Worth after a difficult upbringing that included his father’s suicide and a childhood spent in poverty under his single mother’s care. Punk rock first captured his attention, yet he later turned toward folk and country, drawn especially to the songs of Townes Van Zandt. Those recordings prompted him to begin performing in local clubs and dives while still a teenager. The independent releases Flyin’ High and East Texas Blues helped him build an audience around Fort Worth, after which La Honda Records issued Fried Chicken & Evil Women in 2019, expanding his reach beyond Texas. Fellow musicians became early supporters, and actor Jason Momoa also took notice. Rodney Crowell produced the 2021 album Vincent Neil Emerson, issued jointly by La Honda Records and Thirty Tigers.
Emerson toured extensively behind his first two widely available records, frequently alongside like-minded artists such as Colter Wall and Charley Crockett. A 2022 detour into rock came with the Live at Luck Mansion EP, highlighted by his version of Neil Young’s “Cowgirl in the Sand,” which in turn led to his collaboration with producer Shooter Jennings. The resulting The Golden Crystal Kingdom appeared on RCA in November 2023.
