Volbeat emerged in 2001 as a Danish rock outfit whose multi-platinum recordings fuse hard rock, classic metal, glam, punk, and rockabilly. The group has repeatedly cited Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash among its formative influences while also embracing the catalogs of AC/DC, Social Distortion, and Metallica, all of which inform an approach built on memorable songcraft, high-energy delivery, and instrumental command. Every studio album has reached gold status in Denmark, and the 2007 sophomore release Rock the Rebel/Metal the Devil attained platinum certification. The band’s first Vertigo album, Beyond Hell/Above Heaven (2013), charted in the lower half of the Billboard 200 and earned broad praise, whereas its follow-up that same year, Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies, climbed to number nine; Seal the Deal & Let's Boogie reached number four in 2016. Rewind, Replay, Rebound, issued in 2019, became the act’s highest-charting Danish entry at number two, while Servant of the Mind returned to its heavier roots upon arrival in 2021.

Founder Michael Poulsen, previously frontman of the Danish metal band Dominus, assembled Volbeat in October 2001. Dominus had issued four albums over a decade and left a deep imprint on the local scene before Poulsen decided to begin anew, channeling his longstanding admiration for Elvis into a hybrid that paired traditional heavy-metal heft with classic-rock swing. Early lineups included guitarist Franz Gottschalk (later replaced by Thomas Bredahl in 2006), drummer Jon Larsen, and bassist Anders Kjølholm. The quartet’s 2002 self-titled demo drew modest attention, yet the follow-up Beat the Meat secured European radio play and propelled the band to the semifinals of the Danish talent competition Live Contest. From that point Volbeat maintained an unbroken cycle of touring alongside major metal acts from both Europe and North America while collecting numerous genre and industry honors.

A deal with Rebel Monster yielded the official debut The Strength/The Sound/The Songs, which dominated Danish sales charts and captured Best Album honors at the 2005 Danish Metal Musik Awards. Festival appearances at Roskilde and Summer Breeze followed in 2006, along with a nationwide Danish tour. Rock the Rebel/Metal the Devil entered the Danish album chart at number one, prompting further European dates that included support slots for Metallica and Megadeth and another Roskilde appearance. Guitar Gangsters and Cadillac Blood repeated the Danish chart-topping feat in 2008 and expanded the group’s reach into pop audiences while preserving its core sound.

Above Heaven/Beyond Hell arrived in 2010 with guest contributions from Michael Denner of Mercyful Fate/King Diamond, Napalm Death’s Mark “Barney” Greenway, Kreator’s Mille Petrozza, and Jacob Øelund of Taggy Tones. Extensive headline and festival routing occupied the next eighteen months. In 2012 the band recorded its fifth album, Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies, which introduced former Anthrax guitarist Robert Caggiano after he was initially enlisted to co-produce and supply solos. The set topped charts in Austria, Canada, Denmark, Holland, Germany, Norway, and Switzerland, reached the U.S. Top Ten, and landed inside the top tier in Sweden and Belgium.

Following worldwide touring, Volbeat reunited with longtime co-producer Jacob Hansen. Lead single “The Devil’s Bleeding Crown” preceded the June 2016 release of Seal the Deal & Let's Boogie. The concert document Let's Boogie: Live from Telia Parken appeared two years later. Rewind, Replay, Rebound was issued in 2019 after the short, polarizing single “Parasite” and the track “Leviathan”; guest spots came from Clutch’s Neil Fallon on “Die to Live” and Exodus/Slayer guitarist Gary Holt on “Cheapside Sloggers.” The album peaked at number two in Denmark and inside the Billboard 200’s Top 30. A 2021 compilation, Hokus Bonus, gathered previously scattered bonus material, after which Servant of the Mind emerged later that year. Co-produced by Hansen and Poulsen at Hansen Studios in Denmark and Sonic Debris Studio in New York amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the record reaffirmed the band’s heavier signature style.
