Georgia indie pop quartet We Versus the Shark sidestep easy categorization through an unpredictable yet singularly approachable mix of unrefined dance rhythms, funk propelled by guitars, and the flair of lo-fi and art rock. Luke Douglas Fields (baritone/microtone/guitar/vocals), Samantha Erin Paulsen (guitar/vocals), Jeffery Daniel Tobias (bass/keys/vocals), and drummer Scott Philip Smith operate in tight coordination as one entity, forgoing any conventional frontman by drawing on their collective multi-instrumental abilities to swap roles and share vocal duties across extended live performances. Their work has drawn favorable comparisons to acts ranging from the Minutemen to Gang of Four and XTC, while their self-produced debut album Ruin Everything! appeared in January 2005 as the first release on the local Hello Sir label, which the band helped establish.
