Toronto-based Weird Nightmare functions as the solo project of Alex Edkins, frontman of Metz. The endeavor produces sharp, charged garage punk carrying a pronounced strain of power pop melody. Its first release came as a self-titled album issued by Sub Pop in 2022.

Edkins, who sings and plays guitar in the noted noise rock group Metz, has remained central to Canadian punk since the early 2010s. After relocating from Ottawa to Toronto, the band entered the Sub Pop roster in 2012 and cultivated a worldwide audience through its angular, aggressive noise punk. In 2020, while the COVID-19 pandemic persisted, Edkins began tracking solo material that fused the forceful sound of his main band with bright, hook-driven elements drawn from power pop and the melodic side of 1990s indie rock. Merging newly composed pieces with earlier songs unsuited to Metz, he finished the Weird Nightmare album, which his longtime label released that May.
