Biography
Dan Willson operates Withered Hand as his solo outlet, shaping heartfelt D.I.Y. acoustic material and delivering it through a ragged tenor from his Edinburgh base as an indie folk-rock artist. Good News marked his 2009 debut and earned notice both domestically and overseas, with further recognition arriving via New Gods in 2013 and How to Love in 2023. The 2024 collaboration Williams Willson united him with English singer-songwriter Kathryn Williams.
After years spent in several Edinburgh bands during the late 1990s and early 2000s, Willson turned to solo work once his wife gave him an acoustic guitar for his thirtieth birthday. He moved gradually from group participant to lone performer, developing loose, jangly songs that first surfaced on the debut EP Religious Songs under the Withered Hand name. Immediate interest in that approach led to a second EP in 2009, after which he partnered with acclaimed American producer Kramer on the 2010 full-length Good News.
His ragged tenor and often lo-fi, acoustic-centered style has since become emblematic of the U.K. D.I.Y. community, and he belonged to the Fife-based Fence Collective alongside King Creosote and James Yorkston. Two further Withered Hand EPs surfaced in 2012 before he returned to recording. The resulting sophomore album, New Gods, arrived in early 2014 on Fortuna Pop and Slumberland. Tony Doogan, whose credits include the Mountain Goats and Belle and Sebastian, produced the set, which also features Pam Berry of Black Tambourine, Eugene Kelly of the Vaselines, and musicians from Belle and Sebastian and Frightened Rabbit.
Nine years passed before How to Love emerged in 2023 as a poised, intimate collection addressing Willson’s mental health struggles. In 2024 he joined Kathryn Williams for Williams Willson, a set of warm, heartfelt songs grounded in themes of grief and loss.
