Germany's Wizard stands as a steadfast adherent to Manowar's epic power metal tradition, blending classic metal with galloping riffs and lyrics steeped in war-driven fantasy themes. Drummer Snoppi assembled the group in the early '90s, after which singer Sven D'Anna, guitarist Michael Maass, and bassist Volker Leson joined the lineup and delivered the debut album Son of Darkness in 1995. Battle of Metal arrived in 1997, followed by Bound by Metal in 1999; although both releases circulated primarily through mail order, they cultivated a devoted if modest following. A serious heart condition that struck Maass in December 1999 compelled an extended hiatus from live performances and studio work, yet the band regained its full momentum with the 2001 release Head of the Deceiver.
