Yonatan Gat helped establish the high-energy Israeli trio Monotonix, a group celebrated for its untamed performances and relentless touring schedule. The band spent several years circling the globe with its psych-heavy hard rock before disbanding in 2011, after which Gat launched a solo career. He quickly launched a series of improvised performances alongside drummer Igor Domingues and keyboardist Tamar Aphek. The Village Voice soon recognized him as "Best Guitarist of 2013," and his debut solo EP, Iberian Passage, appeared the following year on the Joyful Noise label. His guitar style blended Brazilian-influenced melodies with blown-out punk production, while his recordings also featured additional layers such as vocals, guitar textures, and field recordings he captured personally. The next year he expanded the short Iberian Passage into the full-length Director, a set of live improvisations captured by Thee Oh Sees producer Chris Woodhouse during a U.S. tour and performed with drummer Gal Lazer and bassist Sergio Sayeg. Even before Director received an official release, the same lineup had already tracked another album in a single day at the studio of legendary punk anti-producer Steve Albini. Three years after that, the trio issued Universalists, an ecstatic, eclectic record that wove in samples from an Italian choir and Balinese gamelan musicians along with a collaboration featuring the Eastern Medicine Singers, a powwow ensemble from Rhode Island.
