Stockford-on-Tees, a town in North East England, gave rise to rock band The Young Rebel Set, which came together in 2007 around the material of singer/songwriter Matthew Chipchase. Their raw, sincere style drew from American figures such as Bruce Springsteen and Johnny Cash, '90s Brit-pop, and socially aware groups like the Clash and the Pogues, allowing them to build early momentum. The opening years brought steady single releases and tours throughout the U.K. and Europe that produced unexpected traction in Germany. A 2011 deal with British label Ignition Records (Oasis, Primal Scream) led to the arrival of debut album Curse Our Love. Expanded touring followed, and in 2013 the band gathered in Glasgow at Chem19 Studios with producer Paul Savage (Mogwai, Franz Ferdinand) to track the successor. Issued in September 2014, Crocodile refined the group’s personal, grounded sensibility via a tighter, collective approach.
