Biography
Zaki Ibrahim performs as a Canadian neo-soul singer whose expansive approach also draws from hip-hop, spoken word, jazz, and world music. She entered the world in Vancouver, British Columbia, as the child of a South African father and a Scottish mother. Throughout her childhood she moved repeatedly between Canada and South Africa, passing extended periods in Cape Town. Eventually she settled in Toronto, where she launched her musical career. Ibrahim helped establish the District Six Music label and issued her first commercial recording, the ten-track EP Shö: Iqra in Orange, in 2006. Two years afterward she followed with the eight-track EP Eclectica (Episodes in Purple), which appeared through the Sony Music subsidiary Red Ink Music. In 2009 the track “Money” earned a nomination for R&B/Soul Recording of the Year at the JUNO Awards.
