Zeus Faber unites two Swiss friends with rigorous classical backgrounds, Olivier Truan and Tristan Feldbauer, both of whom write songs, play keyboards, and serve as co-producers, with Truan additionally handling programming. Truan completed studies at the Basel Conservatory of Music, the Manhattan School of Music, and the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he earned magna cum laude honors, and has worked alongside acts such as Cocodrilos as well as jazz saxophonist Dave Peterson. Feldbauer received classical instruction in Switzerland, France, and Italy; outside music he works as a teacher, practices archeology, and holds certification as a master scuba diver.

The sea and its enigmas inform Feldbauer’s artistic vision, a theme he explored independently for several years until Truan accidentally removed a demo tape from Feldbauer’s residence. Drawn to the piano sketches on the tape, Truan partnered with Feldbauer to refine the initial ideas, and the pair adopted the name Zeus Faber from a fish known for altering its coloration to match its surroundings. On their recordings this approach merges jazz elements with ambient textures, evident on the 1993 release Scubason—“sound of the deep”—and the 1996 album Below.

After mailing a demo CD of Scubason inside a brown paper bag accompanied by a single-paragraph letter, the duo secured a contract with the Hearts of Space label and continue to fashion fluid, ever-shifting sonic environments that balance intellectual demand with a relaxed atmosphere.
