Zonata emerged in 1998 as a power metal outfit from Borås, Sweden, assembled by vocalist and keyboardist Johannes Nyberg together with guitarists John Nyberg and Henke Carlsson, bassist Mattias Asplund, and drummer Mikael Hörnquistwith. The Century Media imprint quickly signed the group after hearing their demo The Copenhagen Tapes, whose title deliberately echoed Iron Maiden’s Soundhouse Tapes. Their first album, Tunes of Steel, arrived in 2000 and earned strong critical praise for its melodic power metal sound rooted in classic metal traditions.

Reality followed in 2001, cut as a quartet after Carlsson exited, while 2002’s Buried Alive introduced replacement second guitarist Niclas Karlsson. Both releases adhered to the band’s established approach yet heightened the focus on memorable choruses and sporadic symphonic keyboard textures. Although fans and reviewers responded favorably, Zonata dissolved without clear explanation in 2003.
