Biography
Guitarist Vic DiCara joined forces with Robert "Rasaraja" Fish, the ex-vocalist of Resurrection, to launch the East Coast hardcore outfit 108 in 1992. Before that venture DiCara had already established himself on the opposite coast as a member of the storied hardcore-metal unit Inside Out alongside Zack de la Rocha, later the voice of Rage Against the Machine. Inside Out’s volatile performances were documented on the 1990 EP No Spiritual Surrender, whose intensity the newer band sought to replicate while pushing the earlier group’s spiritual themes into openly devotional territory rooted in DiCara’s immersion in Hinduism and his commitment to Hare Krsna principles.
Even when their stance invited derision inside the hardcore community, 108 remained steadfast, issuing two EPs, two full-length albums and a live record before disbanding in 1996. Their last performance took place at CBGB that summer. DiCara resurfaced in the region five years later to complete a revived lineup of Burn, while drummer Chris Daly went on to found the influential emocore band Texas Is the Reason.
Reunion discussions began in summer 2005 around a proposed appearance at Syracuse’s Hellfest; although the festival was scrapped just two days beforehand, the musicians elected to resume live activity. The core quartet of DiCara, Fish, Daly and bassist Trivikrama Dasa booked shows on both coasts and started composing fresh material. Equal Vision Records assembled the group’s complete catalog into the double-disc set Creation. Sustenance. Destruction., issued in summer 2006. Weeks later they followed with the limited-edition EP Oneoeight. Early the next year, now featuring drummer Tom Hogan, the band tracked its first album in more than a decade at Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou’s studio, scheduling the release through Deathwish, Inc. for later that year.
