2:54 takes its moniker from a cherished drum passage in the Melvins’ “A History of Bad Men.” Sisters Hannah and Colette Thurlow comprise the project, whose sparse, lo-fi pop draws on stoner-rock textures. Before adopting this darker stance the siblings had played in the punk band the Vulgarians; once they slowed their approach they began exploring atmospheric textures under the 2:54 name. Several tracks were recorded at the pair’s London flat, and after their GarageBand demo drew notice from Nylon, Fader, and Guardian UK the duo announced plans for an EP due in late 2011. The self-titled debut LP appeared on Fat Possum Records in 2012. Strong reviews prompted a 2014 signing with British imprint Bella Union, whose release of the follow-up The Other I arrived that November.
