Biography
Born in Blackpool, England, during December 1991, Aiden Grimshaw trained at the Michael Hall Theatre School and later secured a role on the BBC children’s series Half Moon Investigations. His national profile expanded after he entered the 2010 edition of Simon Cowell’s U.K. X Factor, performing Kanye West’s “Gold Digger” at audition and advancing directly to the live shows. Rejecting conventional pop presentation, he delivered minimalist, sharply defined interpretations of older material that distinguished him from the program’s typical contestants. Public voting eliminated him in week 7 when he finished behind Katie Waissel, leaving him ninth overall.
RCA Records subsequently signed Grimshaw, who spent the following two years shaping material for his first album alongside Jarred Rogers (Lana Del Rey, Tinchy Stryder) and Joel Pott of Athlete. The resulting single “Is This Love,” issued in June 2012, blended anthemic drum ‘n’ bass with electro-pop and previewed the sound of Misty Eye. That album appeared in August 2012, entered the U.K. albums chart at number 19, and drew praise for fusing contemporary pop, drum ‘n’ bass, and electronica.
