Biography
Britain's Cher Lloyd brings an energetic blend of pop, rap, and R&B to her singing, supported by a powerful resonant voice and an outgoing personality suited to live performance. After appearing as a contestant on the U.K. edition of The X Factor, she achieved rapid worldwide recognition once her debut album Sticks + Stones arrived in 2011.
Lloyd entered the world in Malvern, Worcestershire during 1993 and devoted herself to singing from an early age, pursuing performing arts studies throughout secondary school. Following a string of unsuccessful tryouts, she earned entry to series seven of Simon Cowell's British talent competition in 2010 by delivering the Keri Hilson arrangement of Soulja Boy's "Turn My Swag On." Her performances on the program ranged across Coldplay's "Viva la Vida," Jay-Z's "Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)," Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend," and two Black Eyed Peas tracks—"Where Is the Love?" and "I Gotta Feeling"—the latter sung alongside will.i.am. She ultimately placed fourth at the season's conclusion.
After leaving the show, Lloyd joined Cowell's Sony BMG-connected Syco imprint and commenced recording sessions. The single "Swagger Jagger" surfaced in June 2011, with the full-length Sticks + Stones following months later. The project performed strongly, reaching the U.K. Top Five and the U.S. Top Ten while spawning further successes such as "With Ur Love" and "Want U Back."
Capitalizing on that momentum, Lloyd returned to the studio under Epic Records and issued the single "I Wish" in 2013, which reworked Skee-Lo's 1995 track of the same title. Her second album, Sorry I'm Late, produced by Savan Kotecha and Shellback, appeared the next year and included the singles "I Wish" and "Sirens." It attained number 12 on the Billboard 200 and number 21 in the U.K. By 2015 Lloyd had ended her association with Epic and moved to Los Angeles to concentrate on songwriting and greater artistic oversight. A Universal agreement led to the July 2016 release of the single "Activated." Following a period spent preparing her third album and welcoming her first child, she resurfaced in October 2018 with the track "None of My Business."
