Alex Band began his professional journey fronting the post-grunge group The Calling, which gained traction toward the end of 2001 thanks to the Adult Top 40 number one hit "Wherever You Will Go." That track held the summit position for a total of 23 weeks—making it the second-longest reign among all songs that reached the top—yet subsequent releases from the band achieved far less chart success, causing their momentum to fade rapidly. The Calling called it quits in 2005, which opened the door for Band to explore opportunities outside the group. Band had already notched a Top Ten hit apart from his bandmates in the form of the 2003 Carlos Santana collaboration "Why Don't You and I." Following that, he inked a solo contract with Geffen Records and started work on his initial album project. After parting ways with the label four years afterward, he opted to proceed independently. In 2008 he put out The EP, while his first full-length solo effort, We've All Been There, arrived in 2010 via his personal imprint AMB in partnership with EMI distribution.
