Entering the New York hip-hop landscape in the late 1990s, South Jamaica, Queens rapper Ali Vegas drew early attention as part of a fresh wave of introspective and emotionally resonant MCs expected to carry forward the borough’s legacy embodied by Kool G Rap, Nas, and Mobb Deep. Throughout the following decade, however, mounting record-label complications derailed his momentum and postponed the arrival of his debut full-length project. His initial contract came via Columbia and the Trackmasters production duo Poke & Tone, yet the arrangement ended when the imprint lost its distribution agreement in the early 2000s. Vegas next aligned with Casablanca Records, the fledgling venture launched by former Sony president Tommy Motolla, only for the label to stall after Universal transferred its marquee artist Lindsay Lohan to Motown in 2006. During the interim he maintained steady visibility on the New York mixtape circuit through numerous street releases and singles, some positioned as precursors to a major-label bow, including the Kanye West–produced “The AV Theme,” which incorporated the SpongeBob SquarePants theme. Seeking to bypass further corporate obstacles, he established Council Recordings before ultimately becoming the flagship act on NBA player Lamar Odom’s Rich Soil Entertainment in 2006. Following these prolonged setbacks, he readied his self-titled solo debut for release in 2008.
