A veteran presence in New York rap, Tragedy Khadafi emerged from the Queensbridge Houses during rap’s earliest years. Born Percy Chapman in 1971 to a single mother in those same projects, he first encountered the music at age nine while it was still forming in the South Bronx and surrounding neighborhoods. An Astoria community event featuring LL Cool J’s “Rock the Bells” crystallized his own ambitions, prompting him to adopt the name Jadeski and team with DJ Hot Day as the Superkids for two independently issued tracks in 1986. Marley Marl took notice, steering Chapman away from Hot Day and into the Juice Crew; the young artist contributed “The Rebel” and “Live Motivator” to Marley’s 1988 album In Control. Before those cuts appeared, however, a three-year sentence at Elmira Correctional Facility interrupted his progress at age sixteen. Inside, Chapman immersed himself in Malcolm X’s writings, and upon release he enrolled in community college to study Black history, setting music aside. A chance meeting with Joe Fatal at a show reversed that decision, leading to an A&M deal and the Intelligent Hoodlum releases of 1990’s self-titled album and 1993’s Tragedy: Saga of a Hoodlum. Rebranding as Tragedy Khadafi, he scouted Capone-N-Noreaga on the streets and helped shape their 1997 debut The War Report while also linking with Mobb Deep and forming Iron Sheiks alongside longtime associate Imam T.H.U.G. His own Against All Odds, originally slated for 1999, finally surfaced two years later and introduced HeadRush Napoleon, a collaborator who would recur on later projects. Still Reportin’ arrived in 2003 and Thug Matrix followed in 2005; the next year brought the mixtapes Blood Ballads and Thug Matrix 2. In 2007 Chapman was arrested on drug charges and imprisoned, yet The Death of Tragedy reached listeners that summer. While incarcerated he joined Trez for the 2009 collaborative album Lethal Weapon, which featured Big Noyd, Willie Stubbs, and additional guests. Early release for good behavior in 2011 triggered an intensified output of singles, mixtapes, and features, culminating in the 2018 full-length efforts Immortal Titans with rapper BP and The Builders.
