Amid the unease that enveloped adolescents and young people amid the COVID-19 crisis, many sought fresh outlets to enliven their confined surroundings. The influencer Aliyah’s Interlude emerged in this climate, building an enormous audience through her singular fashion choices before extending that visibility into modeling and music once limitations lifted.

Born Aliyah Bay in Atlanta, Georgia, in 2003 to Sierra Leone immigrants whose family operated a clothing-recycling enterprise, she absorbed the practice of recombining garments from an early age. Throughout her childhood the habit of pairing unexpected pieces became second nature.

During the 2020 lockdown she began posting her looks online, emphasizing pink garments such as miniskirts, bikini tops, and fishnets alongside flamboyant accessories that ranged from oversized necklaces and Moon Boots to wigs and furry hats. She eventually branded the aesthetic “Aliyahcore,” a hashtag that soon registered hundreds of millions of impressions.

By 2023 the online momentum translated into offline engagements. She walked runway shows at Fashion Week events in London and Barcelona and appeared in the music video for Doja Cat’s Top Ten hit “Agora Hills.” She then released music of her own.

Her debut single “IT Girl” placed confident rap verses over a ‘90s house production recalling the work of Grace Jones mixed with RuPaul. The follow-up “Fashion Icon,” issued in 2024, employed the same approach but substituted an electronic beat inspired by Eurodisco. The next release, “Love Me,” became the first to combine rapped and sung vocals.
