Canadian singer/songwriter Andre Ethier crafts emotionally direct songs that draw from contemporary folk traditions while incorporating clear blues elements, delivered through his understated yet fervent singing style. After spending years in the garage rock outfit the Deadly Snakes, he shifted as a solo performer toward a less aggressive, slower-paced sound, though his longstanding appreciation for vintage R&B remained intact; his close-up shows convey a simmering power whether addressing personal relationships, everyday observations, or matters of political and social concern. On his first solo release, the 2004 album Andre Ethier with Christopher Sandes Featuring Pickles and Price, traces of his earlier rock approach still surfaced amid the lively acoustic blues setting, whereas 2008’s Born of Blue Fog marked a complete embrace of his revised direction, and the 2021 set Further Up Island formed the final chapter of a trilogy that incorporated vintage drum machines into the sonic palette.

Born in Toronto in 1977, Ethier first connected with music during fifth grade through an emerging taste for hard rock and Pink Floyd; guitar lessons began in seventh grade at school, and by high school he had started the group Eighthrib alongside classmates. Upon graduating in 1996 he joined several friends to launch the Deadly Snakes, a garage rock band assembled initially for one friend’s party, with the expectation of a single summer run; instead the unit endured a decade, issuing its debut single in 1997 and first full-length Love Undone in 1999. Creative horizons widened on the 2005 album Porcella, the group’s most stylistically diverse recording, before the members elected to disband in 2006.

Ethier had already launched his solo career prior to that split with the 2004 acoustic blues session Andre Ethier with Christopher Sandes Featuring Pickles and Price, captured largely live in the studio. The 2006 follow-up Secondathallam established a more personal voice, still blues-based yet quieter and more dynamic, allowing his vocals to dominate while instruments receded. Born of Blue Fog arrived in 2008 with even greater minimalism, featuring solo guitar on multiple tracks. The 2017 release Under Grape Leaves initiated a three-album collaboration with producer Sandro Perri that employed vintage rhythm machines to shape the sound and refine the arrangements; its successor, 2019’s Croak in the Weeds, maintained the same lean framework and inward lyrical focus, while 2021’s Further Up Island achieved a heightened equilibrium between elegance and solitude. Outside music Ethier maintains an active practice as a visual artist whose work has appeared in exhibitions in Toronto, New York, Los Angeles, Madrid, and Copenhagen. He shares no family connection with the Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder of the same name, yet in 2007 the Toronto Blue Jays flew Canada’s Andre Ethier to Los Angeles to perform the national anthem during an interleague series against the Dodgers.
