Biography
Possessing a playfully breathy vocal style, Belgian singer-songwriter-producer Angèle merges present-day dance-pop with the sensibility of classic French pop. Her first album, 2018's Brol, climbed to number one in both France and Belgium, while the 2021 duet "Fever" with Dua Lipa later reached the summit of the singles charts in each territory. The same year brought her screen introduction through a cameo in the musical Annette, after which she issued her second album, Nonante-cinq.
Born Angèle Joséphine Aimée Van Laeken in Brussels in 1995, she is the daughter of actress Laurence Bibot and the singer-songwriter, composer, and filmmaker Serge Van Laeken, widely recognized as Marka. Her older brother, charting hip-hop artist Roméo Elvis, shares the same artistic lineage. Encouraged by her father, she began studying piano in childhood; following secondary school she enrolled at Jazz Studio Antwerp, yet soon departed to serve as pianist on tour with his band.
Angèle initiated her solo path through social-media clips and performances in Brussels cafés. A 2017 video cover of Dick Annegarn's "Bruxelles" earned her an opening slot on tours alongside Ibeyi and rapper Damso, while her debut single, "La Loi de Murphy," accumulated millions of streams online that year. As momentum built in 2018 she made her Parisian concert debut, appeared on Damso's album Lithopédion, and released Brol in October; the same day saw the arrival of her brother collaboration "Tout Oublier," which peaked at number three in France and number six in Belgium. Brol itself topped the album charts in both nations.
Television bookings, joint projects, and brand partnerships quickly followed, including her appointment as ambassador for a major French fashion house. Another substantial hit arrived with 2019's "Balance Ton Quoi," and she returned to the top of the singles rankings a year later via the bilingual Dua Lipa collaboration "Fever." After guest spots on the comedy series La Flamme she took a small role in the Leos Carax-Sparks musical Annette in mid-2021. Headlined by "Bruxelles Je T'aime," her sophomore album Nonante-cinq emerged in December 2021 and entered the Top Ten in Belgium, France, and Switzerland; the stand-alone single "Amour, Haine et Danger" surfaced the next year.
