Ann Beretta took shape in 1996 as a four-piece punk outfit based in Richmond, Virginia, with guitarists and vocalists Rob Huddleston and Leer Baker, bassist Chris Rupp, and drummer Russ Jones comprising the lineup. Several participants had previously played in the now-defunct local group Inquisition, and the new band drew strong inspiration from the Clash, Rancid, and Stiff Little Fingers. Their first full-length, Bitter Tongues, appeared on Fueled by Ramen Records in 1997, after which To All Our Fallen Heroes came out on Lookout two years later. Rupp and Baker subsequently departed to form Sixer, prompting Matt Bedford to join on bass—though Donovan Greer eventually took over the role—while the remaining members carried on as a trio. Raw Power Records issued the live recording The Band Played On: Live at Home in 2000. Early the following year Lookout released the band’s third studio album, New Union Old Glory; at the same time Huddleston issued his debut solo effort of folk-leaning material under the name Foundation. In 2003 Ann Beretta moved from Lookout to the Canadian punk label Union 2112 to put out Three Chord Revolution. Huddleston kept developing projects with Foundation while the band itself eventually entered a period of inactivity. The 2012 compilation Wild, Young, and Free gathered various demos and unreleased tracks, and Old Scars, New Blood—a set of re-recorded selections drawn from across the group’s history—surfaced in 2018.
