Born in Los Angeles into a household where music held central importance, Matthew Alsberg began studying guitar and piano during early childhood. By the time he reached high school, where his classmates included Murs, Double K from People Under the Stairs, and Eligh, he had added bass and trombone to his instrumental skills while pursuing studies in both jazz and classical traditions alongside a deep engagement with punk and hip-hop; although he experimented briefly with rapping, he soon shifted focus entirely to production. Deeply involved in the Los Angeles underground rap community, Alsberg, performing under the name AntiMC, issued his debut album independently in 1998. Friend Radioinactive later enlisted his assistance on the Mush Records release Pyramidi, which appeared in 2001. Label co-founder Robert Curcio, who had become acquainted with Alsberg, responded positively to the producer’s work and extended an invitation to join the roster. AntiMC’s EP Run arrived in 2003, with the full-length Bitter Breaks following later that same year. The pair reunited in 2004 for Free Kamal, and after serving as a touring bandmember with Boom Bip, the multi-instrumentalist issued It’s Free, But It’s Not Cheap in 2006.
