Biography
The solo project of Tale of Us member Matteo Milleri, Anyma fuses finely detailed melodic techno with progressive house while bridging sound and visual digital media. Before the 2023 arrival of debut album Genesys, a thematic exploration centered on a digital entity called Eva, the project issued multiple EPs and staged immersive audiovisual performances. Appearances by Grimes, Sevdaliza, and CamelPhat marked the record, which was succeeded the next year by Genesys II, a double-length set pairing fresh tracks with reinterpretations of earlier material.
Although born in New York, Milleri moved to Italy early in life and later crossed paths with Carmine Conte during sound-engineering studies at Milan’s SAE Institute. The pair launched Tale of Us in 2008 and settled in Berlin twelve months afterward. While Milleri placed several sparse techno releases under his own name, the duo gained traction through exploratory DJ performances and emotionally charged yet understated productions for Visionquest, Life and Death, and Minus. They established the Afterlife imprint in 2016 and, the following year, issued the piano-centric ambient album Endless via Deutsche Grammophon. Even as Tale of Us continued mounting Afterlife showcases and appearing at Coachella, Tomorrowland, and Movement, Milleri redirected his primary efforts toward Anyma.
He first employed the alias for a 2020 rework of Moby’s “My Only Love,” featuring Mindy Jones, then delivered the debut EP Sentient on Afterlife in June 2021. Rose Avenue put out Claire the next month; its title track arrived alongside the inaugural full-resolution NFT music video. Anyma joined Amelie Lens for the ten-minute ambient-techno piece “Lightning Over Heaven,” and the single “Running” surfaced later that year.
In 2022 the progressive-house track “Consciousness,” created with Chris Avantgarde, received a widely circulated Eric Prydz remix. Co-released by Afterlife and Interscope, the full-length Genesys appeared in 2023. Presented through audiovisual concerts and NFT artworks, the album traced the arc of humanoid character Eva and the interplay between humans and machines. Alongside “Consciousness” and the further Avantgarde collaboration “Eternity,” Grimes featured on “Welcome to the Opera,” while Sevdaliza, Rebüke, and CamelPhat also contributed. Genesys II followed in 2024, incorporating work with Argy, PARISI, Karin Park, and additional artists, together with remixes of Genesys material by Daniel Avery, Kobosil, and Kölsch.
